The Right Spirits

After a prolonged period in a makeshift sanatorium - sleeping cures, blood cleaning etc. she decided to return to the living. Releasing herself into the flow of life rather than swimming against it, feeling part of rather than apart from. One of the multitude of « reasons » for this change of heart was contained in a letter written by Dr Carl Jung on the 30 January 1961 : « You see Alcohol in Latin is »spiritus« and you use the same word for the highest religious experience as well as for the most depraving poison. The helpful formula therefore is : spiritus contre spiritum. » She had been looking into the bottle or smelly can for her spiritual calling. Jung had also said that alcoholics were « frustrated mystics ». She must now become « right sized » in the world, no more looking downwards or upwards at others.
